Silly season in Scotland

First Alan Curbishley was linked with a managerial move to Hearts; then almost immediately the papers (and other bloggers) told of Glasgow Rangers declaring their interest in Curbs on the back of their disappointing start to the season. Yesterday, Gordon Strachan, Glasgow Celtic manager said that the Premiership would be a better place if both Glasgow giants were admitted to the top league in England, though what this would do to the remaining Scottish teams wasn't mentioned. Yes, it's started to get boring in Scotland, so they start to look south for entertainment.

Pedro45 has a view on the Celtic/Rangers in the Premiership debate: If they want to join our leagues, they are welcome. But like any other club, they should start in a league where they can gain entry as did Aldershot, AFC Wimbledon and the like, and work their way up the pyramid ladder. At present, the Premiership is blocked to them both, so why not start lower down? If you think about it, they could put fairly junior or reserve teams in to the leagues every year until they get near the Conference, when they may be forced into playing more experienced teams. The journey into the Football League, and inextricably toward the Premeirship would be harder, and all told, would take about ten years from admission (depending where they start) I reckon. But you have to remember that these wishes to join England's elite started about ten years ago! If they had had the foresight then, they could both be getting very excited about it now!

Of course, it will never happen; we have a European Super League now (called the Champions League) and all the "best" teams play in that year after year. Do Celtic and Rangers fall into the best sides in Europe category? No. They may both get large crowds every home match, and have a great away following, but neither have enough money from TV rights to challenge regularly. The reason the TV money isn't there is because it has been boring watching Rangers and Celtic dominate Scottish football for the last fifty years or so (apologies to Aberdeen, Hearts, Hibs, Dundee United, Kilmarnock, Morton and Motherwell who have all had their moments in that period) while continuing to overdo the religious bigotry.

Every season we get the same pleading from North of the border, but both clubs should concentrate on their own league, then do well in European competition, and if they could be successful, they would be playing Arsenal and Ajax, Bolton and Barcelona, Manchester United and Milan, plus all the other European footballing elite every couple of weeks.

Comments:
What the hell are you talking about? Rangers and Celtic are both huge teams who more than deserve to be playing in Europe. If they were playing in the premiership then I have no doubt that they could be challenging the top temas.

Bolton? Major side? Get real.

Ok, let's get real. Which European competition are Celtic currently playing in? Oh, they got knocked out of the one that Bolton are comfortably qualifying from, yes?
Could the Glasgow giants compete well in The Premiership? Maybe. Maybe not. What you are not seeing is that Bolton are a very good team, and would probably beat everyone in Scotland on current form.

For evidence, I point you at the Eurofootsie league which rates every current league side in Europe through a complicated rating system. Curent placings -
Bolton 20th
Charlton 48th
Celtic 56th
Rangers 77th

Happy now?

Celtic were knocked out of the Champions League not the Uefa Cup - As it was the 1st round of qualifying they failed to land in the safety net that is the Uefa cup (ala Everton).

IMO at the present moment Celtic & Rangers would probably fall into that middle ground of teams like Bolton, Middlesborough, Charlton who will be vying for Uefa Cup spots come the end of the season.
(recent meetings with between Scottish & English teams have saw the Scots team coming out on top with the exception of Rangers V Man Utd in the Champions League)

However within a year or 2 I believe there is no reason why they cannot compete with Liverpool, United & Arsenal.

At present the SPL champions pocket somewhere in the region of £2million - avoiding relegation would see them earn the same ammount in the premiership and also the ability to attract players who have previously turned their nose up at the SPL would strengthing there bargaining power.

Without the OF the Scottish game would settle to a natural level - akin to the likes of Norway, Greece etc. I beleive that this would be good for our game and you'll probably find attendances would go up.

The likes of Hibs & Hearts have been a breath of fresh air this season and the thought of them & Aberdeen etc. fighting it out for the SPL is a interesting prospect.

Good post Simplyton - rational, and correct (well spotted the competition error!).

My original post is not knocking either Glasgow teams play (except to say that they are not among the best teams in Europe at present), simply their constant moan about wanting to play in the English Premier League. This is an unreal dream and against UEFA rules, currently.

I have no doubt that any team with the support of the OF would be a force in the Premiership, given time and the right players, management structure etc. But it will never happen, and the sooner the media, and those connected with these two Scottish giants accept that the better.

Good luck to Morton!
